Congratulations on your admission to the Johnson Cornell Tech MBA Class of 2025! This is just the first in a long list of successes to come. This is Issue #1 in a series of emails that will cover important topics for new students and are designed to help you get ready for your Johnson Cornell Tech MBA program at Cornell Tech campus. 

Your Summer Curriculum 

To succeed in business and compete with today’s leading industry minds, you need to have a solid foundational understanding of business concepts and principles. Your summer core is all about growing your knowledge and expertise in an accelerated program. Here’s a quick look at your MBA summer schedule:

It All Kicks Off with Orientation

Your program officially starts the morning of Monday, June 3, 2024 with orientation events designed to acclimate you to the Johnson and Cornell Tech campus community and to get you up and running. Classes begin Tuesday, June 4, 2024. Attendance in-person beginning on June 3 is required, so please plan all travel early enough to be here and start your program on June 3! 

Please note: Johnson Cornell Tech MBA students are required to attend a second orientation session; Tuesday, August 20 and Wednesday, August 21, which will involve the whole student community from other Cornell Tech programs. 

Housing

We are not currently accepting applications for the 2024-2025 term. The housing application will open during the first week in March and we recommend that you check the website for updates. You can find answers to commonly asked questions on the FAQ page. Please note, although we intend to offer housing for your program, on-campus housing cannot be guaranteed and therefore it is also recommended that you seek off-campus housing options.

Cornell Email Address/Net ID Activation

You have received an email with instructions foractivating your NetID and Cornell email account online. Please activate your NetID immediately. If your link has expired, please connect with IT support services –https://it.cornell.edu/netids. If you did not receive an email notification within 48 hours of deposit, please contact the admissions team – admissions@tech.cornell.edu. As a new student, you will set up your email account when you activate your NetID. Your email address will be automatically generated using your Cornell NetID. You must also set up Two-Step Login so you can access services vital to getting started as a new student, such as Student Center and Student Essentials. Please note, starting May 22, all emails and communication will be directed to your new Cornell email address!

Financial Aid

The U.S. Department of Education recently announced additional delays in the processing of 2024-25 FAFSA data. If you plan to take out Federal Student Loans either Federal Direct or Graduate Plus Loans, we highly recommend you complete the 2024-25 FAFSA form as soon as possible to avoid any delays.

Immunizations

All students must complete Cornell’s new student health requirements process to comply with state and federal laws, meet public health guidelines, and support their health care while at Cornell Tech. Stay tuned for further details and deadlines on required immunizations.

Student Health Plan (SHP)

Cornell University requires all students to have health insurance. Please note that vision and dental plans are optional and not included in the Aetna Student Health Plan.

If you meet requirements to waive the health insurance, follow instructions on this website. Waivers must be approved tentatively by May 31, 2024. If you have any questions, please contact their office at studentbenefits@cornell.edu or 607-255-6363. 

Student Disability Services 

Disability accommodations, and support are available for students with disabilities, including mental health diagnoses, temporary injuries, and other disabilities. If you are seeking disability accommodations or exploring if your disability symptoms are impacting your academic endeavors, please complete our Disability Self-Disclosure Form. We encourage you to connect with our office as soon as possible. Once you have completed the form, it can take up to 3 weeks to follow-up with you. 

We actively participate in the social justice model of seeking disability accommodations and support. We recognize that there are many reasons why you may not have third-party documentation of your disability or condition. Your Summer Curriculum 

Your summer core is fast-paced and dedicated to building the foundational business acumen you need to succeed. Over the course of the summer, your focus will be our core curriculum. You’ll also have the opportunity to take some elective coursework if you wish. The summer is also central to your recruiting preparation.

Academic Modality

Your orientation and classes will be fully in-person. We strongly encourage you to relocate before June 3 so you can get fully settled. The summer core is highly accelerated, so time to relocate or unpack is very limited once classes begin. If you have any anticipated delays in arriving by June 3, please reach out to studentaffairs@tech.cornell.edu to discuss. Please note that we may not be able to accommodate delays and we do not offer deferral requests except in cases of immediate military deployment or personal medical emergencies.

Meet the Student & Academic Affairs Team

Jackie Klein, PhD, Assistant Dean of Graduate Education has been working with students on college campuses for over two decades in an academic and student affairs capacity. Prior to Cornell Tech she worked to start up NYU’s newest campus in Shanghai, China where she lived and worked for two years. Jackie received her PhD in Counselor Education at the University of Iowa and her Master’s Degree in Counseling & Development at CW Post Long Island University. In her free time, Jackie enjoys traveling, working out,  reading, exploring new restaurants, and spending time with her daughters and husband.

Monica Patten, Assistant Registrar, received her B.A. in Psychology and M.A. in Higher Education from New York University. With over 15 years of professional experience in higher education at NYU, she has worked across financial aid, admissions, and registrar departments. Monica is a native New Yorker who is happy to share local (and secret!) resources for those new to the area! In her spare time, Monica dabbles in photography, travel, and foodie-related adventures! 

Lauren Zehner, Assistant Director of Student & Academic Affairs, received her BA in Communication at The State University of New York at Geneseo, while also completing minors in Psychology and Music. Lauren has been at Cornell Tech for 4.5 years working in administration, student employment, student events, and now as the Assistant Director of Student & Academic Affairs. Her favorite part of her role is creating a welcoming and inclusive community on campus! In her spare time, Lauren enjoys traveling, reading, playing music, and baking.

Darshita Dhanak started at Cornell Tech in 2023. She is responsible for providing student support in relation to overall well-being, as well as, supporting key student life program initiatives. She moved from Dubai, where she had prior experience working in higher education, as well as, working with children with developmental difficulties. Darshita has a BSc in Psychology from University of Nottingham, UK and a MSc in Developmental Psychology and Clinical Practice from University College London, UK. She enjoys dancing, watching films and traveling in her spare time.

Heidi Marshall joined the Student & Academic Affairs team as the Academic Affairs Coordinator in 2023. Heidi leads the PhD appointment process as well as course support (grader; general support) student hires. Additionally, Heidi assists with registrar functions and helps implement large scale student events. Heidi comes to Cornell Tech after 2 years at the Ithaca campus. Heidi received her B.S. in Actuarial Science at Bryant University and a M.A. in Higher Education Administration with a Concentration in Student Affairs from Boston College.

Danielle Gregg leads support for international students upon matriculation including orientation, Curricular Practical Training (CPT), Optional Practical Training (OPT), updates to I-20s, as well as continuing support for our alumni on F-1 visas following graduation. Additionally, Danielle works with the Student & Academic Affairs team to execute large student events. She comes to Cornell Tech from Boston where she served as an International Student Advisor and Designated School Official for students at Computer Systems Institute. She received her Bachelor of Science at Union College and completed masters coursework towards a degree in Language Science and Technology at Universität des Saarlandes, Saarbrücken, Germany. Danielle also studied abroad in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam for a semester.

This newsletter is aimed at preparing you for your MBA program at Cornell Tech. We have some new announcements about Uploading Student ID Card Photo, and Complying with the Student Health Requirements, along with ongoing reminders that need your attention. We are aware that this is a lengthy email with a lot of important information. Please do read it thoroughly. 

 

1. Get Financially Ready 

The U.S. Department of Education recently announced additional delays in the processing of 2024-25 FAFSA data. If you plan to take out Federal Student Loans either Federal Direct or Graduate Plus Loans, we highly recommend you complete the 2024-25FAFSA form as soon as possible to avoid any delays.

2. Complete the Enrollment Checklist

The Cornell Tech MBA Enrollment Checklist catalogs the steps you should take to ensure you are fully prepared for your transition to Cornell Tech and to Johnson. You can find more details about the Enrollment Checklist – along with expanded information about Important Dates, Financial Planning, and Housing – on the Cornell Tech MBA New Student webpage.

3. Important To-Do Items

  • Activate your NetID, Email, and Two-Step Login – Complete this as soon as possible! 

You have received an email with instructions for activating your NetID and Cornell email account online. Please activate your NetID immediately. If your link has expired, please connect with IT support services –https://it.cornell.edu/netids. If you did not receive an email notification within 48 hours of deposit, please contact the admissions team – admissions@tech.cornell.edu. You must also set up Two-Step Login so you can access services vital to getting started as a new student, such as Student Center and Student Essentials. This is due ASAP and no later than May 20, 2024. Please note, starting May 22, all emails and communication will be directed to your new Cornell email address!

  • Upload your Student ID Card Photo – Deadline May 17

Please make sure to upload a photo of yourself for your Cornell Tech ID card following the instructions here. If you previously had a Cornell ID card (ex: you completed your undergrad at Cornell), your Cornell Tech ID will be automatically generated using the same photo from your original ID. If you would like a new photo used, please upload it using the link above. The deadline to complete this is May 17! 

  • Get Compliant with Student Health Requirements and complete the required forms – Deadline June 12

All students must complete Cornell’s new student health requirements process to comply with state and federal laws, meet public health guidelines, and support their health care while at Cornell Tech. Make sure you are completing your required immunizations and uploading your documentation by June 12. There will be consequences of noncompliance with Cornell’s Health Requirement, please review the website for more information. If you need to make an appointment for immunizations in NYC and you have the student health insurance plan, you can make an appointment with Weill Primary Care in NYC for when you arrive by emailing them at this address: pcappt@med.cornell.edu and identifying yourself as a Cornell Tech student. If you have questions about the requirement, please send a secure message through our patient portal: Log in to myCornellHealth using your Cornell NetID and password, and go to Messages > New Message > Send a message or attachment to Immunization Requirements. Cornell Health only communicates through the secure portal above, therefore it is your responsibility to check the Cornell Health portal frequently for any updates and messages.

*You might notice that some deadlines have different dates. Your deadlines are earlier because your program begins in June. 

 

4. Still on the Hunt for Housing?

The Cornell Tech Housing Office started accepting online applications, April 1st. Please seeThe House websitehere. Be sure to follow application directions carefully and activate your Cornell NetID in advance, if possible. Housing applications will not be prioritized based on the date and time of your application; all applications completed by April 15th will be given priority in the first round of assignments. Housing assignments will be communicated to you via email 2 weeks after April 15th. Applications submitted after that time will be processed on a rolling basis beginning in May.

Please note that there are a limited number of single units (studios & 1br’s) on each floor. If your priority is to live on-campus, you should consider including a shared option (2br or 3br) when identifying your top 3 preferences of unit type in your application as the availability is much higher. Questions may be directed to housing@tech.cornell.edu.

Wondering about the Day-to-Day? 

Generally, you’ll take two classes at a time, with sessions all day long. Typically, you’ll have classes on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, while Wednesdays and weekends are your days to study, collaborate on group projects, prep for recruiting, and other MBA core activities. There will be some exceptions—you’ll have class or exams on the occasional Wednesday, and exams are sometimes administered on Saturdays and/or Sundays. Visit Manhattan’s Meatpacking District! Get outside and explore the High Line and Little Island, or window shop at Chelsea Market, all for free.
